About the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation

The CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1977 to generate philanthropic support to help CHRISTUS Spohn Health System fulfill its mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ so that all may experience God’s healing presence and love. On July 26, 1905, the doors of the first Spohn Hospital opened on North Beach in Corpus Christi. The Sisters of the Incarnate Word were there to greet and care for the first patient. Dr. Arthur E. Spohn was there, too. It was he who had the vision to build a hospital where he could care for the roughly 7,000 residents of Corpus Christi.

Without the three Sisters who came to manage and serve in the new hospital, his vision might have remained his dream. But, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio answered God’s call and responded to Dr. Spohn by agreeing to operate the hospital. The three sisters, together, traveled the dusty trail to Corpus Christi to open Spohn Sanitarium.

Today, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System is a faith-based, not-for-profit health care ministry serving a half-million people in South Texas. We partner with physicians to care for patients with three hospital campuses in Corpus Christi (Memorial, Shoreline and South) and hospitals in Alice, Kingsville and Beeville. We also care for our communities through a network of family health centers, a mobile clinic, diabetes center, wellness services and health screenings.
