Proceeds raised will benefit the expansion of CHRISTUS
Spohn South’s Emergency Department
Save the Date! Watch for details.
We are growing with the Southside
The proceeds from this year’s golf tournament are designated for the expansion of the emergency room at Spohn –South. As the City of Corpus Christi has grown to the south side, so has the need to expand the Emergency Department at Spohn Hospital – South. This Emergency Department was originally built in 1994 and obviously so much has changed since then! To better meet the needs of our community we are adding 13,012 square feet and renovating the existing 5,813 square feet.
One of the most significant impacts of this 18,825 square foot expansion and renovation will be that the number of patient treatment rooms will more than double! We will now have 28 patient exam rooms (currently we have 12). This significant expansion will provide our associates space for a more efficient work flow and will give our patients and their families essential privacy when they are ill and vulnerable. The new Patient Drop-off entrance will provide a more visible, convenient, and efficient entrance for patients and their families.
The expanded Emergency Department will afford the facility adequate support spaces such as physician workspaces, results pending area, more private triage rooms, expanded EMS bays, and a modernized and spacious lobby/greeting area better suited to patient comfort.
About the Event
The Richard King III CHRISTUS Spohn Grand Classic has become one of the most notable fundraisers of the year across South Texas with roots grounded solely in philanthropy and a love for the game of golf.
CHRISTUS Spohn Health System’s charitable golf tournament has supported the healing mission of the hospital system for more than two decades. The philanthropic event began in 1991 when the late Vernon Medlin, M.D., a longtime radiologist and radiation oncologist with CHRISTUS Spohn, teamed with Corpus Christi Country Club Head Golf Professional Doug DeSive to raise money for the hospital system through his favorite pastime.
The 2002 Grand Classic was held in memory of the late F.F. Rogers M.D., a general surgeon who practiced with CHRISTUS Spohn. Dr. Rogers had made such an impression on one of his patients, Richard King III, that King was inspired to chair the event and host it in tribute of Rogers. As a member of the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation’s Board of Directors, King championed the tournament for several years. When King passed away, it seemed natural to name the tournament in his honor.
